The following information will also be placed in your child’s P.A.N.T.H.E.R.S binder.
Please refer to it throughout the school year. If you have any questions about your child, please feel free to contact
me at school at 980-343-9895. Please leave a message and I will return your call within 24 business

*** Important information that will help this year run smoothly for us all: ***
The First Couple of Weeks: Students should wear the transportation tag for the first couple of days until we establish our routines. Please remember to notify me in writing if there are any changes in the way your child will be going home. Notes should be placed in the P.A.N.T.H.E.RS Daily Communication Notebook. If you need to email me for transportation changes, please do so before 2:00 p.m. We cannot accept verbal changes from your child or sibling. If you want to walk your child to the classroom for the first few days, we understand. However, it is best for everyone if you allow your child to walk to class independently after the first 3 days of school. Independence is an important skill we practice daily in 1st grade.
Every morning we check each student’s binder. We do not check book bags! Part of your child’s mornin responsibilities will be to unpack and deliver their binders to us. Students will also be responsible for informing us if they have a lunch box/lunch money. Lunch boxes will be placed in their assigned cubby. If a child does not have a lunch box, they will receive a school lunch.
Communication:
DAILY:
Each student will have a P.A.N.T.H.E.RS Daily Communications Binder. This will be our main source of communication.
I ask that you check this binder every evening. Please place any notes, transportation changes, etc. in this binder. When sending lunch money or any other funds, please let us know what it is for and place it in a sealed, labeled envelop or Ziplock bag and put it in the zippered pouch in the binder. If we have a message for you regarding your child’s behavior, upcoming events, permission slips, etc. we will place it in the binder. Please check this daily and when messages are sent, sign it—adding comments if needed. Read a book every evening and complete the monthly reading log each night. Keep these in the binder. When your child arrives in the mornings, they will place this binder in the designated crate.
Clothing:
Please send your child to school in uniform clothes that they can manage themselves, especially in the bathroom (no back zippers, difficult buttons/snaps, or “onesies”). I do request that you not allow your child to wear Flip Flops to school. These shoes are not conducive to walking in line, playing on the playground, or walking out to the bus lot. Please refer to the Palisades Park Elementary School Uniform Policy.
***All students need to bring a change of clothes (uniform) to be kept at school in case of any type of accident. *** Please send them as soon as possible. Place the clothes in a Ziplock bag labeled with your child’s name. We will store these in the classroom.
Personal Items:
Please label all of your child’s personal items that come to school (backpack, lunchbox, jackets, sweaters, raincoats, change of clothes, etc.). You wouldn’t believe how many things will end up in the lost and found by the end of the year. ***Please leave toys at home. ***
Absences:
If your child is absent, we must have a written excuse indicating the reason. Also, if possible, call the school and let us know if your child is going to be absent.
Arrival:
Students should arrive at school between 8:45 and 9:15 a.m., unless they attend the Before School Program. Car riders arriving after 9:15 a.m. must enter through the office to obtain a tardy admittance slip. Students arriving after 9:15 a.m. on the bus are not considered late. If you wish for your child to eat breakfast, remind them to go to the cafeteria before entering the classroom. Breakfast ends at 9:10 a.m.except for students arriving on late buses.
Going Home:
Set a regular routine. If the way your child is going home changes one afternoon, please send a note with your child in his/her P.A.N.T.H.E.RS binder. If a note is not received, your child will go home in the usual manner. If you need to pick your child up before dismissal time, you must go to the office and sign your child out, (even if it’s only 5 minutes early). We are not allowed to dismiss children from classrooms early ourselves.
Money:
When you send money to school, please send it in a labeled, sealed envelope or Ziplock bag and place it in the zippered pouch located in the P.A.N.T.H.E.RS binder. Please put your child’s name and what the money is for on it.
Homework:
1st Graders will have weekly homework. Positive homework helps to establish the home-school connection and involves parents as partners in their child’s learning experiences. At the end of each week, we will send home a homework calendar for the next week. The activities will reinforce the concepts introduced in the classroom. More information on our classroom homework policy will be available in a separate communication.
Birthdays:
If you want to send in or bring a special snack for your child’s birthday, we suggest cupcakes or cookies (but it has to be store-bought—CMS Policy). We don’t have time in our busy academic schedule for birthday parties, so we usually take the snack to lunch and have it for dessert. There really isn’t enough time during lunch time for cutting and serving cake… at lunch, we only have 25 minutes. Presents and balloons should be given at home.
Lunch:
Please feel free to come and have lunch with us anytime—just sign-in in the office and meet us in the cafeteria by 12:55.
Our lunch time is 12:55-1:20.
Snacks/Water Bottles:
Individual snacks are welcome in 1st grade. Snacks should be items that are healthy and that can be eaten quickly. Possible snacks include cheese nips, goldfish, pretzels, granola/cereal bars, fruit snacks, and crackers. Please avoid sugar snacks, cake, cookies, and products with nuts. Water bottles are also welcome but no other drinks (no juice boxes, CapriSun, Gatorade, etc.). Water bottles must be spill-proof containers. This will help keep our classroom clear of sugar and BIG minds alert and ready to learn!
Sleep:
Please make sure that your child gets plenty of rest each night and that he/she eats something for breakfast. It takes a lot of energy to stay on task during our busy days.
Name Tags:
Students will be issued Palisades Park nametags. Replacement nametags will cost $1.00.
Book Orders:
Your child will be bringing home a form to order books once a month. If you wish to order, simply fill out the form and send a check made out to the book company (or cash in exact change) back to school in an envelope. You will also have the opportunity to order online, if you wish to use a credit card. Go to www.scholastic.comand enter code HWPW2, create an account and place your order before our due date. These orders are provided as a convenient way for parents to buy quality books at a low price. As an added bonus, for every dollar that is spent on books, the classroom earns bonus points. These points are used to purchase books/activities for our reading centers and units. Of course, you are never under any obligation to order.
Thank you so much for your assistance in helping your child make the transition into their 1st grade year. During the year, we will continually keep you abreast of units and/or items concerning topics that we are studying during our particular units. Students really enjoy bringing information from home to share and add to our learning! We look forward to a great year!
Again, please call or email if you have any concerns, questions, or comments.
